Isolated

Isolated

August 1, 1971 - As the only person inside the command module for Apollo 15, Al Worden became the "most isolated human being" as he orbited the moon 2,235 miles from his fellow crew members (David Scott and James Irwin) on the lunar surface.

The Apollo 15 mission was a huge success with many record-breaking accomplishments including the longest time spent on the moon - almost 67 hours! In addition to the 171 pounds of rocks and dust that the astronauts brought home - they also came back with 398 first-day covers (which are basically a bunch of post-marked envelopes). They sold the first-day covers to a stamp dealer and made a ton of money. Even though this was all completely legal, NASA saw to it that nobody on the Apollo 15 mission ever flew in space again.

Al Worden died on March 18, 2020. He was 88.
