National Pornographic

November 1, 1896 - The issue of National Geographic that was published on this day was a milestone in the legendary magazine's history. It was the first time the publication included a photograph of a bare-breasted woman. The picture of a Zulu bride and groom was taken in Witwatersrand, South Africa. Critics point out that the magazine waited almost another 100 years before publishing any images of bare-breasted white women.

Even so, most observers would agree that National Geographic has held to its principles of presenting the world and its people as they are in their natural state. Other ground-breaking images in the magazine's pages included some of the first pictures of human mummies, along with some of the earliest aerial and undersea photography.
