August 14, 1406 - It was on this day that 15 pirate ships attacked a merchant ship carrying parrots, peacocks and pepper from Java en route to Korea. A colorful merchant named Chen Yanxiang was among the 121 people onboard.

After 2 days of fierce fighting all of the cargo was lost and only 40 of the people on the ship, including Chen, survived. They somehow made it to Korea where Chen eventually got another ship and sailed for Japan. As luck would have it, they were shipwrecked and again robbed by pirates. Naked and stranded, Chen was rescued by a shogun warrior who sent him and what was left of his crew back to Java.
