October 21, 2003 - Singer-songwriter Elliott Smith died on this day. He had been stabbed twice in the chest, but an autopsy was inconclusive as to whether or not the wounds were self-inflicted. A suicide note was found on a post-it note. It read:

I'm so sorry - love, Elliott. God forgive me.

Smith had suffered from depression and drug addiction, and these themes figured prominently in his music.
