Exploding Whale
November 12, 1970 - This was the day that a 45-foot, 8-ton sperm whale was blown to bits with 1000 pounds of dynamite. The explosion tossed rotting chunks of whale guts and blubber over 800 feet away. Several cars were damaged and dozens of bystanders were splattered with the stinky mess.
It all started when the whale beached itself in Florence, Oregon. After it died the town officials argued over what to do with the massive carcass. They considered burying it, but worried that the tide would uncover it. They thought about cutting it up into pieces, but nobody was willing to do the job. Finally the decision was made to blow up the whale.
