First Gas Mask

First Gas Mask

June 12, 1849 - One of the earliest attempts at a device that screened dust or other particulates from the air we breathe was patented on this day.

A man from Kentucky named Lewis Haslett called his invention an "Inhaler or Lung Protector."

Other inventors would improve on the design and functionality, but Haslett gets credit for the first official patent.
