Lake Peigneur

November 20, 1980 - An oil drilling crew bored a 13-inch drillbit into a massive salt dome 1200 feet below the bottom of Lake Peigneur. The lake, a bunch of barges and a huge chunk of the surrounding land got sucked into a massive vortex.

It’s a miracle nobody was killed. The salt mine was destroyed but the lake is still there. It used to be about 15 feet at its deepest point, but now it has some sections over 200 feet deep.
