Silver Foxfire
October 13, 1975 - Grammy Award-winning Charlie Rich (AKA The Silver Fox) was at the top of his career. He had a string of huge hits including Behind Closed Doors and The Most Beautiful Girl, but on this night he went a little off the tracks.
Charlie was to announce the Entertainer of the Year at the Country Music Awards, but instead of simply reading the winner's name, he pulled out a lighter and lit the envelope on fire.
Only then did he say the recipient's name, "My friend, Mr. John Denver."
Many speculated at the time that the act was a protest against the changing sound of country music and/or the rise of crossover stars like John Denver, but others say that Charlie was just drunk and showing some bad judgment.
