10 Cent Beer Night

10 Cent Beer Night

June 4, 1974 - How do you get fans to show up to watch two struggling baseball teams? Cheap beer!

It was on this day that Cleveland Municipal Stadium played host to one of the wildest nights in major league baseball history. The Indians were playing the Rangers, and the idea was to give fans up to 6 cups of beer for ten cents a pop.

Before the game started, fans were already shooting off fireworks from their seats. In the second inning a woman jumped into the Indians' on-deck circle and flashed her breasts. During the 4th inning a naked man sprinted across the infield and slid into second base. The 5th inning featured a father and son mooning the crowd.

It got much worse. By the 6th inning the Cleveland fans were firing bottle rockets at the Rangers' dugout and pelting the players with ice, golf balls and batteries.

The 9th inning saw an impressive comeback as Cleveland rallied from 2 runs down to tie the score. The highly inebriated fans were so excited that they poured onto the field and attacked the players.

The players responded by arming themselves with bats and fighting off the drunken mob. There were some minor injuries but miraculously nobody was killed.

The umpire called the game as a Cleveland forfeit.
