Gnats Attack, Dodgers Win
September 15, 1946 - The Dodgers were leading the Cubs 2-0 at Ebbets Field. Kirby Higbe was on the mound for the Dodgers in the sixth inning when a swarm of gnats created a black cloud around him. With bugs buzzing in his ears and flying up his nose, "Hig" threw up his hands and refused to play anymore.
The umpire surveyed the crowd. Everybody was frantically waving their scorecards which in the eyes of the official made it impossible for the players to focus on the ball.
The game was called and the Dodgers were handed a buggy victory.
