The Flying Lawnmower Incident

The Flying Lawnmower Incident

December 9, 1979 - It was halftime of the Jets and Patriots game at Shea Stadium. A club of radio controlled airplane enthusiasts was putting on an exhibition for the crowd of 45,000. Many in attendance would later confess to being more than a little concerned about how closely the planes were getting to the stands.

For the finale, a 40-pound airplane shaped like a lawnmower took off from the endzone and veered over the crowd. Unfortunately, it never pulled out of the dive and slammed into two New England fans. Both men received major head wounds. Sadly, one died four days later from his injuries.

Nobody was ever prosecuted for the incident, as the district attorney declared it an accident.
