Genghis Khan's Hidden Tomb

Genghis Khan's Hidden Tomb

August 18, 1227 - Some historians believe this was the day that Genghis Khan died.

At the peak of his conquering career, Genghis Khan’s Mongol Empire controlled 22% of the Earth's land surface and spanned about 12 million square miles across Asia and parts of Europe.

Exactly how he died is up for debate. Some believe he fell off his horse. Others say he got shot by an arrow. And some claim he was stabbed by a mistress. Nobody knows for sure.

Another great mystery is the location of his grave. There are many theories about why it’s remained hidden for almost 800 years.

One legend claims that the secrecy around his burial was so intense that thousands of slaves who attended his funeral were killed by soldiers, and then those soldiers were killed by another round of troops, and then those poor bastards all killed themselves. Sounds like a lot of work.

Another story has a herd of horses unleashed to destroy all traces of the burial site. Another says that a river was diverted across the site to make it permanently out of reach.

Recent expeditions have turned to satellites and drones for clues to its whereabouts. But - as of now, the location of Genghis Khan’s grave remains a mystery.
