Greensboro Massacre
November 3, 1979 - It was on this day that 5 members of the Communist Workers Party were shot dead by members of the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The victims were:
Cesar Cauce
Michael Nathan
James Waller
William Sampson
Sandra Neely Smith
The massacre happened during a Death to the Klan march that had been organized in response to months of racial intimidation in the area.
Here’s an eyewitness account:
Despite plenty of video footage and eyewitnesses, two separate all-white juries acquitted all defendants (first in state court, then federal court).
Years later, in a 1985 civil suit, the city of Greensboro and several shooters were found liable for wrongful death.
