The Charleston Earthquake
August 31, 1886 - At 9:50pm, all hell broke loose in Charleston, South Carolina as one of the biggest quakes to ever hit the east coast of the United States left 60 people dead.
The jolt was felt as far away as Maine, and scientists estimate its magnitude to be between 6.9 and 7.3.
Many of the survivors suffered from shock and stress as the city continued to shake through hundreds of aftershocks for at least 2 years following the terrifying event.
